Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE): Expand Your Smile

A Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is a proven orthodontic appliance used to gently widen the upper jaw when it’s too narrow. Most commonly recommended for children and teens while the jaw is still developing.

By creating more room in the upper arch, the RPE helps correct bite issues, prevent crowding, and support healthy facial development.

Why We May Recommend a Rapid Palatal Expander

Dr. Do deLatour may suggest an RPE to:

  • Correct crossbites or other bite issues caused by a narrow upper jaw
  • Create space for crowded teeth, often helping to avoid future tooth extractions
  • Improve breathing or airway function in certain cases where a narrow palate affects airflow
  • Guide proper jaw growth in younger patients for better long term results

This appliance is especially beneficial for growing children, setting the stage for a healthier, more aligned smile.

How Does an RPE Work?

An RPE is a custom-fitted device made of a metal framework that attaches to the upper molars. It features a small screw in the center, which is gradually turned (usually by a parent or caregiver at home) to apply gentle pressure on the palate.

This process slowly widens the upper jaw over time, typically taking a few months, depending on the patient’s needs.

What to Expect During Treatment

At the start of treatment, it may take a few days to adjust to the appliance, especially while eating and speaking. Mild pressure or tightness is normal after each activation.

You’ll have regular follow-up visits with Dr. Do-deLatour to monitor your progress and ensure the expansion is happening as planned. These visits help us track changes, make adjustments if needed, and keep your treatment on the right path.

Frequently Question & Answer

RPEs are most effective in children and adolescents, typically between the ages of 7 and 15, when the upper jaw is still developing and more responsive to expansion. Treating at this stage allows for quicker, more predictable results with less discomfort.

Treatment usually lasts a 4-6 months, during which a small screw in the appliance is turned daily (often at home) to gradually widen the upper jaw.

Some mild discomfort or pressure is normal, especially right after turning the screw. Patients might feel temporary tightness or soreness in the roof of the mouth, teeth, or even the nose and cheek area.

This sensation typically eases after a few days. If needed, over the counter pain relievers can help manage any soreness. Most patients adjust quickly and tolerate the expander well.

To keep the expander in good condition and ensure successful treatment, we recommend avoiding:

  • Sticky foods (like gum, caramel, or taffy)
  • Hard foods (like popcorn, ice, or nuts)
  • Chewy foods (like bagels or tough meats)

It’s also important to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Brush thoroughly around the appliance, and use any cleaning tools or rinses recommended by Dr. Do deLatour to prevent buildup and irritation.

Dr. Do deLatour and our team will provide specific care instructions tailored to your treatment, so you feel confident and supported throughout the process.
