RPEs are most effective in children and adolescents, typically between the ages of 7 and 15, when the upper jaw is still developing and more responsive to expansion. Treating at this stage allows for quicker, more predictable results with less discomfort.
Treatment usually lasts a 4-6 months, during which a small screw in the appliance is turned daily (often at home) to gradually widen the upper jaw.
Some mild discomfort or pressure is normal, especially right after turning the screw. Patients might feel temporary tightness or soreness in the roof of the mouth, teeth, or even the nose and cheek area.
This sensation typically eases after a few days. If needed, over the counter pain relievers can help manage any soreness. Most patients adjust quickly and tolerate the expander well.
To keep the expander in good condition and ensure successful treatment, we recommend avoiding:
- Sticky foods (like gum, caramel, or taffy)
- Hard foods (like popcorn, ice, or nuts)
- Chewy foods (like bagels or tough meats)
